Photo Guidelines And Ideas For The New Gaydar

The new Gaydar site and app is now live!  We didn’t just modify the existing Gaydar.net.  It's a brand new site that has been built from scratch.

And you helped us from the very beginning; telling us what you wanted from your new Gaydar and testing various versions and functions along the way. There are LOTS of enhancements and improvements designed and built to make your Gaydar experience a whole lot better.

Gaydar Photo Guidelines

We’re constantly working hard towards making your Gaydar experience not only the best it can be, but also consistent, so no matter how you access Gaydar (on site or app), it will look, feel and behave the same. And that’s not just in terms of functionality, but also in the content that is shown to you, in our words, icons and imagery.

This is by no means a simple task and for us to ensure this happens, we need your help!

We’ve updated the Gaydar Photo Guidelines to help ensure that all photos you load to your profile all follow the same criteria and can be seen on all devices, no matter how you access Gaydar.

Take a look at our key points below.

Your Profile Photo

The perfect profile photo on the new Gaydar is an image of you where your face is clearly visible. This is your Gaydar profile so you need to be the star of the show at all times.

Whilst building the new Gaydar, we also did some research. Did you know that online dating profiles with clear head shots get the most attention? And we want to ensure that you get the most attention. That’s why we’re asking all of our members to ensure their profile photo contains a head shot (face/shoulders/torso).

We’re not saying ‘passport style’ photos where you look longingly at the camera and can’t smile! You can crop an existing photo, take a new one, experiment with light, angles…

What If I Can't Show My Face?

We’ve thought about you too! We know that not everyone is able to show their face on their Gaydar profile for many reasons… So we’ve built you what we call a ‘discreet’ feature. What does this do? It adds a ‘blur‘ layer over your photo which essentially hides your identity. You can use the discreet feature on your profile photo or any public gallery image you choose.  You also have the ability to turn off the discreet feature at any time you choose.  To activate this feature, go to your profile, select 'edit' on either your profile image or public gallery, select a photo, select the 'cog icon', and select 'Discreet'.

Public Gallery Photos

Your public gallery is the best place to tell other members all about you through images.  Remember, an image can say a thousand words.  And the language of photos is like the language of love.  It’s universal!    What are your hobbies? Interests?  What do you like to do when you’re not in work?  Where have you recently been on holiday?  Are you a pet lover?  Do you love to ski and have a soft spot for marine life?

Use your Public Gallery to show all of this…

Private Gallery Photos

Images that are explicit, contain nudity or are sexually suggestive we’re unable to show in any public gallery on the new Gaydar.

If you do have these images, you’ll need to put them in your Gaydar Private Gallery.

Photos that are stored here can be shared with other members as an attachment in a message.

Image Quality

On the new Gaydar, your photos are going to appear bigger. Much bigger! So it may be that some of your current photos are too small for the new site and may either look pixelated or stretched on your profile.  Take a look at our ‘Updating your photos on Gaydar‘ post for more information.  You may need to add some new photos to your profile!
